Benton City is a small town of 2,800 people. Located in the Eastern Washington sage “desert” area on the fertile, green bend of the Yakima River. The climate of long Indian summers and moderate winters boasts an average of 300 sunny days per year. This ideal climate makes this area perfect for numerous privately owned orchards, vineyards, hayfields, and pastures that are abundant in and around Benton City. The City overlooks Red Mountain vineyards and wineries to the west.
Benton City is a world-renowned viticulture area. Located just South of Benton City, Horse Heaven Hills is a 1,800 foot ridge sloping to the river lined with apple, cherry, pear, apricot, and walnut orchards. To the north lies Rattlesnake Mountain, the highest North American treeless mountain. Various recreational activities are available in the area including watersports and fishing on the Yakima River. There are over 30 horse-roping arenas located in this area.
The City provides residents with public fishing areas and boat ramps, wildlife/fishing/bicycle trails, rodeo grounds, horseback riding groups, mud bog race areas, a native plant nursery, a shooting range, a miniature aircraft flying area, and the Horn Rapids campground near the Native American fish platforms. The schools in the area encourage life enriching extracurricular activities of the arts and FFA programs.
